Pope Francis announces he will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra when the Holy Father visits the United States.
The Holy Father Pope Francis has announced that he will canonize Blessed Junipero Serra during his September pastoral visit to the United States. The visit includes a stop in Philadelphia, New York, and Washington,D.C. The Pope said he plans to celebrate Mass at Washington's Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception so he can canonize American missionary Junipero Serra, who brought Christianity to the western United States.

"I would like to go to California for the canonization of Junipero, but I think there is the problem of time," he told reporters.

Blessed Junipero Serra, a Franciscan, is the first evangelizer, teacher and builder of modern California and the secondary patron saint for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. Every fourth grade public and private school student studies Fr. Serra and the California missions. In the United States Capitol each state is represented by two statues of people from their history. These 100 statues include four Catholic priests – Frs. Kino, Marquette, Damian, and Serra. Serra was declared Venerable on May 9, 1985 and Blessed by St. John Paul II on September 25, 1988 along with Jesuit Father Miguel Pro. His feast day is July 1 in the United States and August 26 in Mexico.

Let us pray that the graces from this upcoming canonization will renew and spiritually enrich our Catholic schools.
