okay welcome 4th graders to another voicethread we're continuing our discussion of California and people moving West remember one of the motivations for why people started to move from the 13 colonies was that these Trappers were looking for but they also wanted to go to California because they were looking for I am looking on page 198 199 chapter 5 lesson 2 early twenties and thirties people began looking to California as a place where they can get plenty of land some people continue to move north from Mexico to settle in California others came as immigrants on immigrants as someone who comes from one country you live in another of one immigrant to California was named John Sutter he traveled from Switzerland North America and arrived in California in 1839 land grant in Sacramento Sacramento is in Northern California there any built a settlement called new **** vet then included a wheat farm and cattle ranch and a fort Sutter Sports near a path leading through the Sierra Nevada this is Sacramento is located today most people in the 1820s and 1830s travel to California bike settlers had to be done had begun to travel to California from the United States by land okay let's go ahead you can see a picture here of John Sutter's Fort a picture of a tear here's another picture okay now I'm looking on 200 is a picture of how people when they were called Pioneers the pioneer is one of the first people to settle in a new land these people that this kind of this picture depicts in May 1841 a group of men women and children set for California from Missouri the group show John Bartle Senator John Bidwell The Bidwell expedition was one of the Overland trip to California the trial in a wagon train or a group of wagon each pulled by horses or the group Oregon Trail which was the main route from Missouri to Oregon and you can see it's a green one here they came along there let's see  and you can see the green thumbs all the way into ear that call the Oregon Trail  I believe look at that real quick what was the Bartells in Bidwell Expedition the Oregon Trail comes along here but then goes up the ear if that's the Oregon Trail the bartleson Bidwell Expedition the one that I just mentioned comes along a similar path but it comes down in to hear that was the Wagon train that I was mentioning earlier let's go ahead and you can also see some of the other the California Trail was a real popular trail that people took cake down that way or it looks like it had a little bit of a detour through there a very popular store please call the Donner Party as more people started to go to California are they started stories about how great it is the more more people wanted to come the Donner Party is a popular group of people that decided to come to California it was by this guy named George and Jacob daughter the Donner party which included 87 men and women and children left Missouri California in 1846 so you can see a lot of the trails to California started in Missouri  there was a gentleman named Hastings that new the Donner family and he I'm of this shortcut that would get them to California the Donner Party believe me to follow his plan of fortunately unfortunately his his way of getting to California to the shortcut wasn't even that good as the heavy Travelers struggled across the mountains they were caught in a heavy snowstorm the group set up shelters around what is now Donner Lake some of the strongest members typed out into the deep snow to look for help in Ray after 3 months of snow storms help finally arrived almost half of the party had died from the freezing temperatures and lack of food for the survivors of specially made their way to Sutter's Fort K let's see a picture of the Donner party which is a orange color you could see they came along here and they tried to take this shortcut which stop making for a lot longer drip okay they they decided to follow this Hastings plan this Hastings shortcut and it ended up make them into serious trouble but they're very famous the Donner Party is a famous Wagon Trail Expedition because of what happened here's just a picture of a girl leaning up against a wagon wheel text summary I guess we can read beginning in the 1840s great numbers of settlers from the United States travel to California by and by Wagon Train the trip was often long difficult and dangerous here's the vocabulary you're going to need to know an immigrant to someone who comes one country to live in another Pioneer is one of the first people to settle in a new land and a wagon train is look up wagons each pulled by a horse or oxen questions you're going to need to answer question number 1 is on page 199 how were the reasons for settlers coming to California different from those of rappers the next question I want you to answer is on page 2:01 and it is actually it's on page 03203 did Donner Party get stuck in the Sierra Nevada and why did they get stuck any other comments or questions for your fellow students to respond to and I look forward to seeing you guys in class
